Mind blown. Yeah. Tired. Not so much. Iâd slept enough while half-dead. Now it was time for action.
I missed Kaleb terribly but I didnât have time to crave him. If I let that part of the connection in, I'd be good for no one, so I did what Iâd learned to do with my empathy gift over time, and imagined it closed off behind an invisible shield of glass. It was there, I could see it, but it couldnât touch me unless I let it in. So, provided I kept myself busy and chatted with him at least once a day, I was golden.
I was also a coward.
A big-ass coward.
Instead of returning to the office after my meeting with Dan, I went back to the property we had rented in Seattle. Dan had given us the all-clear to return and it was a convenient place to hold up.
The house was beautiful and luxurious with plenty of space for us all. It wasnât far from the Seattle FBI office. The owner evidently had money so we had the luxury and comfort in regards to furnishings. And it was big enough to house us all with a garden that fed into trees bordering the home giving us privacy.
Weâd have to move some things around to fit Lela in of course.
Iâd already moved into the game room downstairs with Kaleb.
Maybe Lela can stay there with me and Vixen? I was so sleeping with that cat during Kalebâs absence.
Or thereâs Dollyâs old room. Shuffle around Mayraâs and Zax's spare belongings. Yeah. I could see it.
Weâd sort out something. And thatâs what I told myself while heading back to the house without telling the others.
Even though I was still a coward.
Dan called on my way back.
The Elders, or whatever they were, had given us the go-ahead to tell all to Lela. They seemed more forgiving than the Senates who had to vote on every damn thing and negotiate and debate to get a win.
Bullshit.
But I was pleased we had the go-ahead for the detective to come on board.
I text Bernard to bring everyone back to the house along with the case files and any correspondence regarding the Azer killings. I also told him heâd have to give orders to Detective MoraâLelaâ that if she wanted in on the case, sheâd have to temporarily live with us. I had no clue whether sheâd take us up on it. Who knew what her family circumstances were? But Bernard could handle it. He would have to tell her all about us, of course, but heâd handled worse over the years. And it would be the perfect payback after his little breakdown earlier when he needed me to cry so he felt better.
Bernard was also good at strategy. Heâd see the benefits of bringing Lela on board better than most. We would benefit from her skills and access to the local police resources. She had experience going after serial killers and murderers of the human kind. And she also had a long-term background on this case and could help us link things together.
